چکیده

SCSI protocol is the protocol of choice for block storage management. Diierent transport mechanisms such as parallel SCSI, Fibre Channel, iSCSI and Innni-band can be used to transfer SCSI protocol data. Distance and connectivity limitations are the key drawbacks of parallel SCSI. Therefore, Fibre Channel, In-niband and iSCSI (SCSI over TCP) are competing to emerge as the dominant next generation SCSI transport mechanism. By analyzing the diierent components of a network protocol, this paper evaluates whether Fibre Channel, Innniband and iSCSI are (a) suitable for gigabit wire speeds (b) scalable across thousands of interconnected devices (c) satisfy the needs of storage environments and storage protocols.

IP Storage : The Challenge Ahead

Advanced networking technology has led to the genesis of the storage area network model, where host servers can access storage as a service from various devices connected to the network. While the initial approach to storage area networks has involved specialized networking technology, the emergence of Gigabit Ethernet technology has raised the question of whether we can use commodity IP networ...

A Comparison of two Gigabit SAN/LAN technologies: Scalable Coherent Interface versus Myrinet

Several commercial Gigabit interconnect technologies are currently emerging due to the results of the intensive research with the NSF Gigabit Networking testbeds. A fair comparison of these new, but different network technologies needs a common denominator as a basis. To characterize networking performance, we propose to carry out a comparison at three different levels: (1) simple remote load/s...

Gigabit Networking in Norway Infrastructure, Applications and Projects

Norway is a country with large geographical dimensions and a very low number of inhabitants. This combination makes advanced telecommunication services and distributed multimedia applications, like telemedicine and distance education, very important for the Norwegian society. Obviously, an appropriate networking infrastructure is necessary to enable such services and applications. In order to c...

Information Technology Trends

Advances in many areas are dramatically altering the Information Technology (IT) landscape. In this survey, we outline the trends that are likely to be important over the next five years, focusing on four key areas: networks, wireless, user end devices, and knowledge management. A few trends that are too broad to be classified in one of these areas are also mentioned. Although the networking wo...
